We have started our computing lessons by looking at staying safe online. We discussed the importance of age related apps, parental controls and restrictions when using social media apps.

Humanities
We have been learning about the equator, longitude and latitude to identify where countries are in the world. We used an atlas and coordinates to accurately locate countries, including Mexico.

The children have started their topic, Hola Mexico, by exploring the festival of Dia de los Muertos and how it differs from Halloween. They looked at why the festival, also known as Day of the Dead, is significant to the people of Mexico.
Our Roles and Responsibilities
At the start of Year 6, children have the opportunity to take on increased roles throughout school. The roles in school are:
- Prefects
- Librarians
- STEM Ambassadors
- Eco Diversity Team
- Buddies
- Music Monitors
Our representatives for each group are shown below.
Humanities
The children have started their humanities topic with a ‘bang’ Sadly, many balloons were sacrificed to make the paper mache! They have explored the festival of Dia de los Muertos and made a comparison to their festival of Halloween. They looked at why the festival of Dia de los Muertos is significant to the people of Mexico.
Science
Your child has started their Science topic and their big question is: “How can we separate a mixture of water, iron filings, salt and sand?” They have started to recap their previous knowledge on properties of materials and have been exploring what properties different materials have.
English
In English your child has been exploring poetic devices. They have played the game ‘Rap or Shakespeare?’ and they have read through a variety of different poems and rap lyrics to identify the techniques used.
Learning to Learn
In our Learning to Learn week, we completed various activities to help the class settle into year 3. We painted our hands to put into our year 3 fact file, took part in team building activities, completed the egg drop challenge, looked at how our brain helps us to make connections, improved our way of communicating by doing back to back drawings, discussed the learning pit, and finally, paid our respects to the Queen by talking about what she meant to us and what it means to be British.
Brainwaves
The class enjoyed learning about what our brains do and how to keep them healthy during our learn to learn week. We dissected brains to find out the five main functions – sleep, think, puzzle, exercise and emotions. We thought about how understanding is made up of both skills and knowledge and made some glasses to exemplify this. We then tried to do some jigsaws without instructions and realised how seeing the whole picture makes our learning easier. We learnt about the learning pit and how fun it is not to know something as that is when the learning starts!
